Australia

A continent the size of the mainland US, with the population of Texas. Australia rewards travelers who pick one corner and go deep, and quietly drains the budget of anyone trying to circle the whole thing in two weeks.

¶ 01 The verdict

Australia earns the long flight, but only if you resist the map. Pick one or two regions, give them real time, and skip the cross-country dash.

Pack Lightly editorial team

At a glance

  • Top marks for nature and tourist infrastructure, both score 95. It is easy to travel, well-signposted, and English-speaking start to finish.
  • Budget around $85 a day backpacking, $200 mid-range. This is one of the pricier trips in this guide, and distances add fast.
  • The best window depends on where you go: the tropical north is best May to October, the south best November to March.
  • Two weeks covers one region well, the East Coast, or the Red Centre, or the southwest. Three to four weeks lets you pair two.
  • The catch: the distances are deceptive. Sydney to Perth is a five-hour flight, internal travel costs real money and real days.

Australia in one first impression

A quick sweep of the country before you plan the trip.

¶ 10 Edge cases

What if…

You only have 10 days?
Stick to one region. The classic first trip is the East Coast: Sydney, a few days of Great Ocean Road out of Melbourne, then fly north to Cairns for the Great Barrier Reef. Adding Uluru or Perth to 10 days means you spend the trip in airports.
You want the Red Centre?
Fly into Uluru or Alice Springs and give the desert three to four days, sunrise at the rock, Kata Tjuta, and Kings Canyon. April to September is the comfortable window; summer days top 100°F / 38°C.
You want to skip the crowds?
Go west. Margaret River for wine and surf, Ningaloo Reef for whale sharks without the reef-tour crowds, and The Kimberley for genuine remote wilderness. Hobart and Tasmania stay quiet outside summer too.
You’re traveling solo?
Australia is one of the easiest long-haul trips to do alone, safe, English-speaking, and built for independent travel. Byron Bay and Cairns have sociable hostels, the East Coast bus and train network is straightforward, and cities feel comfortable after dark in the central areas. Book the first night ahead so arrival is sorted.

¶ 13 Good to know

Before you commit

Why Australia works

It is a continent, not a country-sized trip. Each region is its own holiday, the East Coast runs on cities and reef, the Red Centre on desert and Indigenous culture, the southwest on wine and surf. The mistake is treating them as a single loop.

The infrastructure makes it easy. Roads are good, rental cars and campervans are everywhere, and everything is in English. The hard part is choosing what to leave out.

Honest downsides

  • It is expensive, food, accommodation and activities all run higher than most of Asia or the Americas
  • Distances are deceptive, internal flights cost real money and the country is genuinely vast
  • Seasons flip by region, the tropical north is a wet-season risk exactly when the south is at its best
  • Sun is intense, UV levels are extreme even on mild days; sunscreen is not optional

Australia with kids

One of the easiest long-haul family trips there is, safe, English-speaking, and built around beaches and wildlife. Kangaroos, koalas and the reef do the entertaining for you.

The Gold Coast stacks theme parks and calm beaches in one place. Cairns pairs the reef with rainforest. Keep internal flights to a minimum and let each base earn a few days.

¶ 14 Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do US citizens need a visa for Australia?

Yes. US citizens need an ETA (Electronic Travel Authority, subclass 601) before flying. It is applied for through the official Australian ETA app, costs around $20, is valid for one year, and allows stays of up to 90 days at a time.

How much does Australia cost per day?

Budget around $85 per person per day backpacking, hostels, self-catering and public transport. Mid-range is closer to $200 with hotels and restaurant meals; comfort travel runs $430 and up. Internal flights are an extra cost on top, since distances are large.

What’s the best time to visit Australia?

It depends on the region. The tropical north, including Cairns and the Red Centre, is best May to October when it is dry and mild. The southern cities and coast are best November to March in their summer. September to November and March to May suit most of the country at once.

How many days do you need in Australia?

Two weeks covers one region at a comfortable pace, the East Coast, the Red Centre, or the southwest. Three to four weeks lets you pair two regions without rushing. Trying to see the whole country in two weeks means spending the trip on planes.

Is Australia expensive?

Yes, and it is worth planning around rather than denying. Accommodation, food and internal flights are the big costs. Hostels, self-catering, campervans and booking internal flights early are the most effective ways to keep the daily total down.

Is Australia safe for solo female travelers?

Yes. Australia is one of the most straightforward long-haul destinations for solo travel, low crime, reliable public transport, and a strong hostel network on the East Coast. Standard city sense applies after dark, and the real hazards are environmental: sun, surf rips and remote-area driving.
